Higher education in Montenegro is acquired at one public university (University of Montenegro), three private universities, four independent private faculties and one independent public faculty. Educational activity at higher education institutions is achieved through academic and applied study programs, as well as through various professional development and training programs. Study programs can be interdisciplinary, organized from at least two fields.
Higher education is carried out according to the 3+2+3 model. Study programs that can be implemented at higher education institutions are:
Accelerated Bachelor Programs-There is a few bachelors’ programs which are structured that students complete the full program including general education requirements, in fewer than four years. This type of bachelor degree is called accelerated programs and typically requires a much higher course load each semester than the usual four-year plans. Students may attend classes year-round, thus adding a third semester in the summer. Following, this reduces completion time to three calendar years or less. Important to note, that universities frequently advise students not to hold outside jobs whilst being enrolled in these intensive programs.
How long does it take to obtain a master’s degree? Earning a master’s degree takes around two years beyond the initial bachelor’s degree; common master’s degrees are the Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Science (MS). Whether students earn an MA or MS depends on the type of university attended rather than the academic requirements fulfilled; the two awards are only different in name, – not in educational requirements or academic status. Master’s degrees are offered to students in a variety of study fields, e.g., psychology, mathematics, biology, etc. In much, the same way as bachelor’s degrees is offered in many fields.
